The United States monetary authority cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year amid economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”
Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions
The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in August.
The figure of positions added to the market in August was down by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Price Data Shows Moderate Increase
Though the bureau’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
